The Division of Workers' Compensation identified three issues associated with the implementation of revision E to the medical electronic data interchange implementation guide.
The division said it had been made aware of its rejection of electronic data interchange reporting of bills related to orthotic fitters and orthotic fitter assistants, hearing aid specialists, and registered nurse first assistants. Upon review of bill reports that have been rejected, orthotic fitters, orthotic fitter assistants, and hearing aid specialists are recognized practitioners who are permitted to bill independently for services or supplies delivered to injured workers pursuant to a prescription and within the constraints of the applicable practice act. These providers would properly bill on the DWC-9 claim form.Accordingly, the division will add the licensure prefixes ORF, OFA, and AS to the valid license table for the DWC-9. In regard to registered nurse first assistants, the Office of Medical Services inadvertently removed the license prefix RN from the table of valid licenses for incoming medical bills for state reporting. The division suggests that carriers will need to be vigilant and only accept and submit bills for services by registered nurses where the carrier has authorized the services of the registered nurse as a registered nurse first assistant.
